By name, or — the question worth asking — by what a funder's recipients actually do and where they are.

Find funders by what they fund
This ranks the 16,646 funders profiled here on how much of their money lands in the cause and state you choose, how many organizations they fund there, how close their typical cheque is to your ask, how many organizations they took on for the first time in their latest filing, how much of their giving goes to a single recipient or to named individuals, and how much of what they filed we could identify a recipient for.
Choose a state or a cause, and an ask size.
What this ranking will not do. It never orders by total dollars, assets or grant count — those put the largest foundations in the country at the top of every list, and almost none of them will read an unsolicited letter. Every figure below describes named recipients: across the corpus we can identify the recipient of about two thirds of 990-PF grant rows, so a funder's real programme is always at least as large as what is shown. Where the IRS has not classified a recipient we say so rather than dropping the funder — that is the "not classified" cause, and it is included by default.
